The purpose of converting this space was to liven up KL Chinatown - bringing people back in time to the 1960-1970s to witness how the Chinese community live their lives. This we hope will add the true Chinese characteristics and identity back to KL Chinatown beyond being a place filled with foreign workers and counterfeit goods. We insistently kept the space to as close to its original state and FREE ENTRY for everyone so that we can share the story of the past and create a reason for the younger generation to come to KL Chinatown to learn about our history through art and technology whilst maintaining the rustic heritage structures.
Achievements : This is a private project by 5 friends who are entrepreneurs in different fields getting together in hopes to make a small difference to KL Chinatown. Launched in April 2019 - project Kwai Chai Hong saw the efforts of a restored heritage back alley with 10 units of decade-old connected shophouses from what was once a dilapidated state to now a tourist attraction for locals and international tourists. With the installation of Mural with QR Codes that brings the audience back in time (to a once forgotten golden era of KL Chinatown in the 60's and 70's), visitors are transported back in time to witness the history come to life through art, architecture and technology.
Every year, the Bai Chuan team will introduce installations during meaningful Chinese calendar of events (mainly Chinese New Year and Mid Autumn Festival) to share with the public a story that relates to the Chinese culture / history / art - bringing Malaysians and humankind closer together through better understanding of our similarities and differences in art appreciation. Each installation tells a story that will resonate in everyone whilst educating Chinese culture to all. The most recent event garnered over 1mil online viewers on multiple social media platforms over the span of 5 weeks.
