The Sustainable Hospitality Award That Sets the Standard for Responsible Travel

The International Travel Awards Sustainable Tourism Awards programme is the travel industry's most credible recognition platform for operators, destinations, and hospitality businesses that have made sustainability not merely a policy statement but a defining characteristic of how they operate. In 2026, the travel industry faces its most consequential sustainability challenge: growing responsibly while genuinely protecting the natural and cultural environments that make travel meaningful in the first place.

Our Sustainable Tourism Awards celebrate the organisations meeting that challenge with substance. The best eco tourism award 2026 goes not to the company with the finest sustainability marketing, but to the operator who can demonstrate with verified data that they have measurably reduced environmental impact, delivered genuine economic benefit to local communities, protected biodiversity, and continuously raised their own standard of responsible practice. Our panel of sustainability experts, environmental scientists, community development specialists, and responsible tourism consultants evaluates every nomination with rigorous independence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sustainable Tourism Awards — Your Questions Answered

Criteria assess verified environmental impact reduction, community benefit delivery, biodiversity protection, third-party certification, sustainability reporting transparency, guest engagement in sustainability practices, and measurable progress against defined environmental and social targets. Judges prioritise verified data over marketing claims.
Certification is valued but not mandatory. Operators with Rainforest Alliance, Green Globe, EarthCheck, Travelife, GSTC-aligned, or equivalent certifications receive recognition for their credential. However, operations without formal certification may still be considered highly competitive if they can provide independent verification of equivalent sustainability performance through audited data.
Yes. A property may enter both Best Sustainable Hotel and Best Zero-Waste Resort if its sustainability performance is strong across multiple dimensions. Each category is evaluated independently, so a nomination in one category does not affect the evaluation in another. We encourage organisations to nominate in every category where they have strong evidence of excellence.
Our judging process specifically assesses nominations for substantive, verified sustainability performance rather than marketing narrative. Judges prioritise independently audited data, third-party certification, and specific, measurable targets with tracked progress. Nominations that rely primarily on aspirational language without quantified evidence are ranked below those with verifiable performance data.
