Bahrain's Travel Industry Overview

The Kingdom of Bahrain, a small archipelago of 33 islands in the Arabian Gulf, has developed one of the Middle East's most dynamic and diverse tourism markets relative to its size. Receiving over 11 million visitors annually — predominantly from neighbouring Saudi Arabia and the broader GCC region — Bahrain has established itself as a cosmopolitan destination that blends ancient heritage with modern luxury, sporting events, and vibrant nightlife.

Manama, the capital, is anchored by a world-class hospitality offer including the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay — one of the Gulf's most spectacular luxury hotels, built on a man-made island — alongside the Gulf Hotel Bahrain, the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain, and the landmark Bahrain World Trade Center, the world's first building to integrate wind turbines as a structural component. The Diplomatic Area and Juffair offer premium accommodation options serving Bahrain's significant international business community.

Formula 1 is Bahrain's most powerful tourism card. The Bahrain Grand Prix, held at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, opens the F1 season each year and draws tens of thousands of international motorsport fans. Hotels throughout Bahrain sell out weeks in advance for the race weekend, generating enormous hospitality revenue and global media exposure. The circuit also hosts other international motorsport events throughout the year. Bahrain EDF (Economic Development Board) has expanded the events calendar with major concerts, festivals, and international sporting events.

Bahrain's cultural heritage is extraordinary. The Dilmun civilization — one of the ancient world's most important — has left behind a landscape studded with 170,000 burial mounds, the UNESCO-listed Qal'at al-Bahrain (Bahrain Fort), and the remarkable Pearling Path UNESCO heritage site that tells the story of Bahrain's pearl diving industry. The Bahrain National Museum and Beit Al Quran Islamic arts centre offer world-class cultural experiences. Traditional pearl diving experiences in the waters around Muharraq Island connect visitors to Bahrain's most distinctive historical identity.

Common Questions

Bahrain Travel Awards — FAQ

Bahrain's leading hotels eligible to nominate include the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, Gulf Hotel Bahrain, The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain, Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, Wyndham Grand Manama, and numerous Rotana, Marriott, and Hilton properties throughout the Kingdom. Bahrain's beach resorts in Zallaq and the hotels serving the Formula 1 circuit at Sakhir are particularly strong candidates for sports tourism hospitality categories.
The Bahrain Grand Prix generates extraordinary global media coverage and tourism activity, positioning Bahrain as an internationally recognised sports tourism destination. Hotels and event management companies that deliver exceptional Formula 1 hospitality packages are strong candidates for sports tourism and corporate hospitality categories. The race weekend showcases Bahrain's ability to host world-class international events and deliver premium guest experiences at scale.
Bahrain's UNESCO World Heritage Sites — the Bahrain Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain) and the Pearling Path in Muharraq — tell stories that are thousands of years old. Bahrain was the centre of the ancient Dilmun civilisation mentioned in Mesopotamian texts, and the pearl diving heritage that made Bahrain wealthy for centuries before oil is uniquely preserved. Heritage tour operators offering authentic pearl diving experiences, Dilmun archaeology tours, and traditional craft workshops are eligible for heritage tourism categories.
Yes. Gulf Air, Bahrain's national carrier and one of the world's oldest airlines, is eligible to nominate across multiple airline categories including Best Regional Airline, Best Business Class (Gulf Air's Falcon Gold cabin), Best In-Flight Service, and Best Airline Lounge. Gulf Air's renewal programme with new Boeing 787 Dreamliners and enhanced cabin products makes it a strong contender for airline improvement and passenger experience categories.
Yes. Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre (BIECC), one of the region's premier MICE venues, and the Bahrain Bay development, are eligible for MICE and business tourism categories. Bahrain's status as a leading GCC MICE destination — hosting major trade shows, conferences, and the Formula 1 paddock club hospitality — makes it a strong candidate in business tourism and event venue categories.
